Feeder Management for Breeding Collections

Managing feeder supply is critical for any breeding operation. Running out of appropriate feeders leads to missed feedings and stressed animals.

Feeding guidelines by age (ball pythons):

  • Hatchlings: Every 5-7 days — hopper mice or fuzzy rats
  • Juveniles (6-12 months): Every 7 days — small rats
  • Sub-adults (1-2 years): Every 7-10 days — medium rats
  • Adults (2+ years): Every 10-14 days — large or jumbo rats

  • Prey sizing rule: The feeder should be approximately the same diameter as the widest part of the snake, or 10-15% of the snake's body weight.

    Planning your supply:

  • Group animals by age bracket and assign feeding frequency
  • Multiply animal count by weekly feeding rate per group
  • Sum totals for weekly consumption
  • Keep a minimum buffer stock of one week of feeders
  • Order 1-2 weeks ahead (2-3 weeks during peak season)

  • Breeding your own feeders:

Cost-effective for collections over 50 animals, but requires dedicated space, time, and consistent management. For smaller collections, purchasing frozen feeders from a reputable supplier is usually more practical.
